Condensation, huh! what is it good for....?
Condensation can come in various types & severity. Two neighbours can live in identical houses, but have a completely different experience of condensation (if at all).
It's generally down to lifestyle & conditions. Windows & doors don't create condensation - they simply indicate you have a high moisture content within your home.
There are also three main types of condensation to be aware of with windows & doors.
The creation of a lot of unchecked internal house moisture can unfortunately lead to mould growth & damage to finishes, materials & belongings in the home so a need to control it is essential.
Outside surface
When condensation is visible on the outside surface this isn't a fault with your glazing, it shows your double glazing is actually working well!
Due to modern technology & recent improvements in double glazed sealed units the increased reduction of heat loss means that there is reduced thermal transmission to the outside resulting in a colder outer pane. This in turn increases the likelyhood of external dew, just like you see on a car or even a lawn.
Between the glass
Moisture between the 2 panes of glass is a fault.
This can be when there is a break in the double glazed sealed unit sealant, or the unit has reached it's end of life. it can range from a slight mist to a considerable amount of water as shown above. Although it isn't necessarily a major issue, a build up of water like above would create a bridging of the glass panes & an increased loss of heat to the outside.
We recommend getting this checked out by our experienced L+L service team who can advise if replacing the glass is a cost effective option.
Inside surface
If you suffer from condensation on the inside of the window in your home you may have an issue.
Although the glazing doesn't cause the condensation, it acts as an indicator to show you there is a high moisture content within your home.
This is caused by high humidity and or a lack of ventilation.
The first actions to try are ventilating the home well to help exchange moist air for drier outside fresh air as well as trying to moderate the home temprature rather than peaks & troughs.
Another very effective idea is to invest in a dehumidifier. These will draw excess moisture from the air & condense it into a collector which can be disposed of.
